Our sterling silver Virgo Earring is based on the sixth constellation of the zodiac which is thought to personify Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, the harvest goddess. According to Greek myth, eternal spring once reigned upon the Earth, until that fateful day when Pluto, the god of the underworld abducted Persephone, the radiant maiden of spring.
With the loss of her only child, Demeter was overcome with grief and abandoned her role as the goddess of fruitfulness and fertility. The once-verdant Earth became a frigid and scorched wasteland. Humanity would have ceased had not Zeus, the king of gods, intervened to reunite mother and daughter.
Zeus proclaimed that Persephone abstained from food and Pluto intentionally gave Persephone a pomegranate for her long journey home. Because she ate from the pomegranate, Zeus declared that Persephone must return to the underworld for four months every year for disobeying him. To this day, spring returns to the Northern Hemisphere when Persephone is reunited with her mother and the winter returns when Persephone dwells in the underworld.
