The fourth astrological sign in the Zodiac, the constellation of Cancerderives its name from the Latin for “Crab”. Relatively small among the constellations, Cancer lies between Geminito the west and Leo to the east. Among stargazers, it is best known as the home of Praesepe, a “beehive cluster” at the center of the constellation, which is the nearest open cluster to our solar system.
Greek and Roman tales are legendary of the battles between Hera and Heracles. Heracles was sent to fight the many headed Hydra that defended Hera. During that battle Hera, sent a Crab from the swamp to snap at Heracles' toes during the battle. Both were defeated and to honor the Hydra and the Crab for their valiant efforts, Heraplaced them as constellations in the night sky. As the sun enters Cancer, the head of the Hydra constellation can be seen. Stories of the two constellations appear together even earlier in Babylonian tales of Bashmu, "The Venomous Snake" and Alluttu, the Crawdad.
